Japan draw pride from stalemate

NAPIER, 27 Sept. - Coach John Kirwan spoke of his pride in Japan's performance after they came within a whisker of winning only their second match in Rugby World Cup history. The Brave Blossoms led Canada from the 24th minute until the 79th but the match at McLean Park on Tuesday ended 23-23 - only the third draw in RWC history.

Italy power to victory over USA

NELSON, 27 Sept. - Captain Sergio Parisse hailed Italy's performance after they secured a potentially crucial bonus point with a 27-10 triumph in their Pool C match with USA at Trafalgar Park on Tuesday. Parisse sent the Azzurri on their way with a third-minute try. Scores from Luciano Orquera and Martin Castrogiovanni followed while Chris Wyles kept USA in contention with a try, conversion and penalty before the interval.

Hug an Aussie, says Mayor

Nelson Mayor Aldo Miccio can hug an Aussie every day if he feels like it, and he wants other Nelsonians to follow his example to counter the anti-Australian feelings brought to life by the Rugby World Cup. Mr Miccio, whose wife Kim and children Lewis and Isabella are Australian, believes that the current burst of negativity doesn't reflect the truth. "It is not true. We do love them," he said this morning.

Back home for one Eagle

The United States Eagles are ready to take on Italy in front of a capacity crowd in Nelson tomorrow night, buoyed by an enthusiastic band of supporters who turned out to greet them at Nelson Airport on Saturday. Among them was Sheila Street, of Nelson, draped in a huge stars and stripes flag, waiting to greet her daughter Vicki Yates' partner, Eagles team member Junior Sifa. The American Samoan-born is a former Nelson Bays and Tasman Makos player.

Lotto Win in Richmond

A $16.80 spend has netted an overwhelmed Richmond woman more than $1 million. The woman, who bought an eight-number Lotto combo ticket, won the First Division prize on Saturday night. She claimed her winnings at Richmond Night N Day mid-morning yesterday.

USA targeting upset against Italy

NELSON, 26 Sept. - Italy coach Nick Mallett and his USA counterpart Eddie O'Sullivan have both shown how desperate they are to win the match between their teams on Tuesday by naming their strongest sides. Mallett has made nine changes to the side that defeated Russia 53-17 last Tuesday, while O'Sullivan has made 14 changes to the team that lost 67-5 to Australia on Friday.
